NRT

The NSF Research Traineeship, or NRT, in medical device manufacturing and design is seeking faculty collaborators and graduate students to participate in the interdisciplinary program supporting master’s and doctoral degree students whose research addresses health and medical challenges through engineering, science and human-centered design.

The NRT program provides $35,900/year stipends, full tuition coverage, and access to unique professional and research experiences, while complementing students’ existing degree programs. Faculty are encouraged to nominate current or incoming graduate students whose research aligns with medical devices, implants, manufacturing, materials, data-driven design or health-focused engineering applications. Contact the NRT Project Team at [email protected] to nominate a student or request more information. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis after the priority date of Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

Key benefits for NRT trainees include:
• Research mentorship with an NRT faculty advisor
• Specialized NRT courses and seminars
• A residency experience at the Mayo Clinic
• Internship opportunities through the ASU Health Care Accelerator
• Professional development workshops and graduate–undergraduate mentorship
• Exposure to patenting and commercialization pathways

Eligible degree programs include:
Mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, biological design, computer science and engineering, civil and environmental engineering, materials science and engineering, life sciences and molecular sciences.

Eligibility note: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to receive stipend and tuition support. The program strongly encourages applications from students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
