Attend faculty meetings for the 2024 Summer Research Initiative, Oct. 17 and 20

Students discuss research in front of a poster at a SURI event.

The goal of the Summer Research Initiative, known as SURI, is to improve doctoral student recruitment by enabling both domestic and international students, including ASU students, to participate in summer research under the mentorship of Fulton Schools research faculty, much like an NSF REU site.

In the summer of 2023, a total of 49 students participated, which included 25 international students and 24 U. S. citizen/permanent residents, including 11 underrepresented minority participants. To date, 10 SURI participants have enrolled in a doctoral program at ASU.

For SURI 2024, the program is accepting in-person projects only. Hosting a SURI student means working with and mentoring your students throughout the eight-week summer period tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2024, to Friday, July 29, 2024.

Research faculty interested in mentoring one or more SURI students for the Summer 2024 program can complete the SURI Faculty Program Submission Sheet. The project submission deadline is Monday, Nov. 27, 2023. Participating faculty and their Schools will be asked to contribute $2,000 each toward the student award packages totaling approximately $10,000.

“The program’s diversity was a valuable aspect. Interacting with peers from various disciplines and backgrounds broadened my perspective and taught me to appreciate different approaches to problem-solving. It fostered an inclusive learning environment where everyone’s unique expertise was celebrated.”
