Share your expertise with a global software engineering community

Software engineering research at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University is tackling some of the field’s biggest challenges, from trustworthy artificial intelligence, or AI, to resilient critical infrastructure. This fall and winter, faculty members have an opportunity to bring that expertise to an international audience through a new webinar series hosted by the IEEE Software & Systems Engineering Standards Committee, or S2ESC.
Lynn Robert Carter, a professor of practice in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence, and chair of the IEEE S2ESC, is inviting Fulton Schools faculty members from across all disciplines to present in one of four virtual webinars scheduled between November and February. The sessions will showcase emerging research while encouraging conversations that can shape the future of software and systems engineering standards.
“Standards evolve through collaboration between researchers and practitioners,” Carter says. “This webinar series is an opportunity for Fulton Schools faculty to share their work with a global community while helping advance the engineering practices that underpin modern software systems.”
The theme of the series is “IEEE/S2ESC Celebrating 50 Years: In the AGE of AI,” and the committee is particularly interested in presentations addressing topics such as:
- Technical debt in critical systems.
- Lessons learned from repository to planning intelligence.
- Speaking truth to power in critical systems.
- Assurance for AI-enabled robotics and intelligent systems.
Faculty members are also encouraged to propose closely related topics that align with the committee’s mission.
Each webinar will be held virtually, making participation straightforward for presenters while reaching an international audience of researchers, educators and industry professionals. Dates and times for the four sessions will be finalized in coordination with presenters.
For faculty members, the opportunity extends well beyond giving a single presentation.
The IEEE Software & Systems Engineering Standards Committee is part of the IEEE Computer Society and works to develop and promote standards that guide software engineering practice around the world. Its work helps ensure that software systems are developed using proven engineering practices that improve quality, safety and reliability.
Presenting through the committee offers valuable professional visibility. The IEEE software standards community includes approximately 35,000 members, providing presenters with exposure to a broad network of engineering leaders.
That visibility can lead to new collaborations with researchers at other universities, connections with industry experts and opportunities to develop future grant proposals and multi-institution research projects. For faculty members working in areas such as AI, robotics, cybersecurity, software engineering or critical infrastructure, the webinars provide a natural forum to introduce their work to colleagues who share similar interests.
The invitation also reflects a broader goal of strengthening the Fulton Schools engagement with international standards development.
