Scalable Classroom Assessments in Large Enrollments
Thursday, Feb. 20, 2025
1:30–2:30 p.m.
Zoom
This session will explore how engineering instructors manage grading at scale. We’ll start with a brief review of key strategies, including iClicker/polling and rubrics, to highlight efficient grading techniques. Then, leveraging the expertise across Fulton Schools departments, we’ll discuss the criteria and needs of our community to ensure effective assessment at scale. In preparation for this meeting, consider: “What is the assignment you give (or would like to give) that is hardest to grade at scale? What factors contribute to that difficulty?”

Noon–1 p.m.

Mastery-based learning is traditionally viewed as a system wherein students move on to the next topic only upon demonstrating mastery of the previous one, often in an asynchronous format. In a university setting with fixed semesters, how can we leverage the benefits of mastery-based learning? Join this CoP to explore how to apply mastery-based assessment strategies in synchronous, traditional learning environments.

This session will explore how learning communities can transform student engagement, belonging and academic success at ASU. We’ll discuss practical strategies, highlight success stories and provide actionable tools to help you integrate learning communities into your courses or programs.
LTH Book Study: “Distracted” by James Lang
Friday, Feb. 28, 2025
1:15–2:30 p.m.
Zoom
This semester, we will read Distracted: “Why Students Can’t Focus and What You Can Do About It” by James M. Lang, published in 2020. The first meeting on Feb. 28 focuses on the introduction through chapter three. In Distracted, Lang challenges conventional views on attention in education, arguing that distractions are not the enemy but a natural part of how the brain learns. He combines modern research with practical strategies to reimagine classrooms as dynamic environments that harness students’ inherent curiosity.
