Submit projects for the 2025 Summer Research Initiative by Nov. 25

Project submissions from interested faculty members are now being accepted for the Summer Research Initiative, or SURI, for 2025!

We would like to extend an invitation for Fulton Schools faculty members to consider participating in the Summer Research Initiative for 2025. The goal of SURI is to improve doctoral student recruitment by enabling both domestic and international students, including ASU students, to participate in summer research under the mentorship of Fulton Schools research faculty members, much like an NSF REU site. This past summer, we had a total of 43 students participating (15 U.S. citizens/permanent residents and 28 international students), including six underrepresented minority participants. To date, 15 SURI participants have enrolled in a Fulton Schools doctoral program at ASU.

For SURI 2025, we are accepting in-person projects only and will be hosting an eight-week summer program, starting with two weeks of remote involvement. Hosting a SURI student means working with and mentoring your students throughout the program (tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to Friday, July 18, 2025).

For SURI 2025, 50 selected students in their junior or senior years, or current masters students, will be offered a $5,000 stipend plus on-campus housing designed to build community, offer networking opportunities and encourage participants to prepare for and consider pursuing a doctoral degree. To participate in the SURI program, we will be asking that faculty members be prepared to contribute $2,500 for each student position and that their school also be able to contribute $2,500 for each student. Depending on the number of interested faculty members, we may need to limit each faculty member to only a single student.

We have designed a SURI website that faculty members can refer to for SURI-related information including an overview of the program, tentative timelines, important deadlines and an FAQ section. 

Research faculty members interested in mentoring a SURI student for the Summer 2025 program can complete the SURI Faculty Program Submission Sheet. The project submission deadline is Monday, Nov. 25, 2024.

The application for students will open on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, and close on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025. Faculty members are invited to encourage interested and eligible students to apply.
