The Frank Rhodes Lecture Series is pleased to announce the upcoming Spring 2023 Scholar Lecture will be delivered virtually on Friday, April 14, 2023. The spring 2023 Frank Rhodes Scholar is Candace Thille, director for workforce, Stanford Accelerator for Learning, and a professor of education and neuroscience at Stanford University. In addition to her work at Stanford University, Thille is the founding director of the Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon University, and most recently she was Amazon’s director of learning science.

In this lecture, Thille will explore how the relationship between learning research and instructional practice can and should change to meet the needs of adult learners and
the larger society. Drawing on her research at the intersection of human and machine learning, she will provide examples from both inside and outside the academy. In 1967, the economist William Baumol wrote “Without a complete revolution … in our approach to teaching … we cannot go beyond (current levels) of productivity.” More than half a century later, the conditions are present for a scientific revolution in human learning. Thille will describe those conditions and explore the opportunities and challenges to redefining the educational and cultural landscape for the benefit of all learners. Thille will share her vision for how higher education can lead in the next half-century.
