Arizona State University invites inquiries, nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Hispanic Research Center, or HRC, with a concurrent appointment as a tenured professor in an academic unit. The appointment will be located on the Tempe campus with an anticipated start date of Friday, July 1, 2022.

Founded in 1985, the HRC is a vibrant university-wide interdisciplinary unit dedicated to research and creative activities and is housed administratively in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Historically, the Center has conducted basic and applied research on a broad range of topics related to Hispanic/Latino populations, disseminated research findings to the academic community and the public, engaged in creative activities and made them available generally and provided public service in areas of importance to Hispanics/Latinos, broadly defined. Wide-ranging in focus and function, the HRC is home to an extensive collection of Chicana/o art that is available for study by researchers and students. In addition, the HRC houses the Bilingual Press, recognized for its publication of literary works, scholarship and art books by or about U.S. Hispanics/Latinos. Beyond its contributions to the humanities, arts and culture, the HRC prioritizes the development of educational opportunities for Hispanic/Latino populations. For example, the HRC is heavily invested in broadening the participation of underrepresented persons in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines and has successfully secured continuous external support for programs in this area for over two decades. From its inception, the HRC has sustained an interdisciplinary focus, inclusive of collaborative and multinational approaches.
The new director of the HRC is expected to reimagine the Center for the 21st century by providing visionary leadership, expanding and developing interdisciplinary research initiatives with affiliated faculty, advancing new models for engaging the regional and global Hispanic/Latino communities, fostering entrepreneurial opportunities and creating synergistic partnerships within and outside the university community. The Director’s vision is expected to align with the design aspirations of the “New American University,” and leverage the opportunities/strengths associated with our context of innovation, interdisciplinarity and access coupled with excellence. We seek a leader who can foster a culture of belonging that prioritizes justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in all of the Center’s functions and operations. The director is expected to contribute to our teaching mission.
- PhD or terminal degree.
- Scholarly record commensurate with appointment at the rank of full professor in an academic unit at ASU.
- Record of collaborative leadership.
- Experience with financial oversight (i.e., research group/center leader; department chair/director).
- Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion, and cultivating and supporting diverse members of the University community.
- Visionary leadership.
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience in conducting research and/or service pertinent to Latinos/Hispanics.
- Articulated commitment to fundraising, grant development and fostering interactions among multiple stakeholders including private sector, research and community organizations.
- Capacity to engage faculty members across a broad range of disciplines.
- Evidence of excellent communication and organizational skills.
