In this workshop, you will be introduced to the topic of implicit bias and microaggressions by engaging in a thoughtful dialogue with the presenter. Implicit or unconscious bias refers to the automatic thoughts or attitudes that affect our everyday actions and decisions. Individuals develop associations over the course of a lifetime by way of life experience and influences from the media, news, and society. Microaggressions are everyday verbal, non-verbal, behavioral, or environment slights, snubs, or insults (intentional and unintentional) that can communicate hostility or negativity towards marginalized groups.
Attendees will learn about the concepts and impact of implicit bias and microaggressions, gain an understanding of common occurrences of microaggressions, and will be encouraged to reflect on how their interactions affect interpersonal relationships with others in the academic and professional environment.
At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define and summarize concepts of implicit bias and microaggressions.
- Review policies, processes and practices for evidence of possible bias.
- Implement strategies to overcome and minimize bias in the work and academic environment.
