Swift spent 22 years as a reporter, editor, columnist, and writing coach for Norfolk’s Virginian-Pilot. He was a Fulbright fellow to New Zealand in 1994 and, since 2012, has been a fellow of Virginia Humanities at the University of Virginia.  In this talk, Swift reflects on his most recent book, Chesapeake Requiem, described as a ”brilliant, soulful, and timely portrait of a 200-year-old crabbing community in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay as it faces extinction.” This nonfiction work was named among the best books of 2018 by National Public Radio, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, Outside and The Smithsonian.
