Samira Kiani, a Fulton Schools assistant professor of biological and health systems engineering, is one of 10 recently named American Association for the Advancement of Science 2019-2020 Leshner Public Engagement Fellows.
The Alan I. Leshner Leadership Institute selects fellows from among university scientists and engineers who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in research and an interest in promoting productive dialog on issues important to science and society.
Over the next year, the fellows will undertake efforts to foster conversation about questions and concerns revolving around pursuits in human augmentation.
Kiani, who is applying synthetic biology and CRISPR technology to develop safer gene therapies, plans to work with an award-winning filmmaker to produce a documentary film and communication campaign focusing on the genomic revolution.
