Abstract
“Moving Forward the Poly Way”
The Polytechnic School (TPS) has a robust set of curricular offerings in a synergistic set of content areas. I will present ideas and my prior work in program growth and broadening student access with respect to under-represented populations. Current TPS measures show there is capacity to increase externally funded research programs. With the interdisciplinary strength of the school, TPS faculty should continue existing opportunities and should identify new opportunities to partner within and outside of ASU. I will present strategies I used to secure federally funded research centers and training grants and discuss how the strategies can help TPS grow. I have served as an administrator in two multi-disciplinary academic units. I will present strategies I have used with respect to strategic planning, faculty and staff recruitment and development and related topics and how these may translate to TPS.
About the speaker
Ellen J. Bass is a professor and chair of the Department of Health Systems and Sciences Research in the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Information Science in the College of Computing and Informatics. She has over 30 years of human-centered systems engineering research and design experience in air transportation, health care and other domains. Her research focus is to develop theories of human performance and associated methods that can be used to evaluate human-system interaction in the context of total system performance. She is a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and a senior member of the IEEE and of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Bass is a member of the Board on Human-Systems Integration (BOHSI) of the National Academies. Bass holds a doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
