Every year as part of the United Way pledge campaign, various departments in Fulton Schools hold FUN-raising events (yes, FUN) to help raise awareness and to have a little fun at work. This year a few events are already being planned, including a chili cook-off and a cornhole tournament. Have you signed up yet?
All money raised at these special events in the next few months will go toward sponsoring a local school in the United Way “Breakfast in the Classroom” program. Our goal is to raise $4,000, which is the amount that will enable a local Title 1 school to participate.
In Arizona, 28 percent of children live in food insecure homes — homes where families have limited or uncertain access to adequate food.
The Breakfast in the Classroom program is administered by Valley of the Sun United Way and supported by the Arizona Department of Education and the Dairy Council of Arizona. Breakfast is delivered directly to each classroom and eaten during the first few minutes while teachers take attendance and begin the day’s classes. All children in the classroom receive the breakfast with no distinction made based on family income.
Teachers whose students receive Breakfast in the Classroom report that students are calmer and ready to learn at the start of the school day, noting that the program generates increases in attendance and student alertness and a decrease in disciplinary problems.
In addition to supporting Breakfast in the Classroom through department fundraisers, you can also provide support directly with your annual United Way contribution. Go to My ASU to donate online or download the pledge form to participate in the campaign. You can indicate that you’d like all or part of your gift to go to Breakfast in the Classroom.
Thanks for supporting our local United Way.
