Dear Colleagues:

Just as we are focused on addressing the many challenges facing society, Valley of the Sun United Way is focused on the challenges facing our communities. Annual giving campaigns make a critical difference in our community’s ability to address these challenges. Almost everyone benefits either directly or indirectly from the many agencies this campaign supports.

As members of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering family, I invite you to participate in the 2012 United Way Campaign. The power of group giving is undeniable. Hundreds of small donations add up to make a huge difference. Together with other colleagues at Arizona State University, we are a significant giving community. It is the goal of ASU, the ASU Foundation, the ASU Retirees and the emeriti faculty to donate a combined $600,000 during this campaign. The goal for the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering is to both raise $45,000 and report 100 percent participation of faculty and staff. This seems ambitious, especially in uncertain economic times, but the strength of our numbers makes this a very achievable goal.

I participated in my first United Way campaign 25 years ago while working for Shell. The investment options today are so much more numerous and more focused than they were then, and you can direct your contribution among multiple impact areas identified by United Way and/or the agencies closest to your heart. Through United Way, you can support agencies like: Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter, American Heart Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona, Free Arts of Arizona, Foundation for Senior Living, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and many others. (See the 2012 partner list.)

I would like to thank our many colleagues who are helping to coordinate this year’s campaign and those who are sponsoring additional events to raise funds to contribute to the campaign. There are a number of incentives being offered to encourage participation—remember to turn in your pledge forms by October 31. Go to My ASU to donate online or download a pledge form to participate in the campaign. If you have any questions or need additional information you can contact your area’s United Way representative.

Thank you for all that you do to support the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the community we call home.

Paul
