Dear Colleagues:

Congratulations on another successful semester! I’d like to share a few recent highlights with you as we wrap up fall 2011:

  • Community outreach: Last weekend, we hosted the FIRST LEGO League state competition. As Arizona’s operational partner, we help promote engineering to kids throughout the state through this annual robotics competition. There were 266 teams in Arizona this year—a 30 percent increase over last year. A special thank you to Patty Smith, our FLL program coordinator, and all of the faculty, staff and students who volunteered their time to make this event a success.
  • New hires: As part of our efforts to grow our faculty, multiple searchers are under way with the goal to add 20-25 new faculty at all levels. The first of these hires has been made: Amy Landis from the University of Pittsburgh will join SSEBE in January. In the weeks ahead, I hope to make many more announcements like this one.
  • Over 500 new graduates: I hope that you will join us for the Fulton Engineering Convocation, Thursday, December 15, 4:30 p.m., in Wells Fargo Arena. Commencement provides a great opportunity to celebrate our successes.
  • eSpace: this new space for students is a great addition to our FSE facilities. We wrapped up the semester with the first of many rounds of FSE 100 final project demonstrations.

In the spring semester, we are looking forward to the debut of a new outreach event, our Engineering Open House, March 30-31. I hope that all faculty will take advantage of this opportunity to share their research and educational outreach activities during this two-day event led by the Engineering Student Council. Please look for more information on ways to get involved in early January.

I want to thank each of you for all that you do to advance the Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Paul
