Have you ever wondered why Hispanic Heritage Month starts in the middle of September? Did you know that there is a difference between Hispanic and Latino?

In spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month, ASU Educational Outreach and Student Services released a list of 10 Things to Know During Hispanic Heritage Month. An impressive fact within the list is that not only is ASU No. 1 among the Pac-12 universities for our number of Latino graduates, but more than 18 percent of the ASU population identifies as Hispanic or Latino. One of ASU’s main values is inclusion of the diverse backgrounds that make up the ASU community. The Fulton Schools reflects that value in the Fulton Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives.

Students can get involved in two engineering student organizations focused on creating a community for Hispanic and Latino students: Latinos in Science & Engineering (MAES) and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).

MAES is the foremost Latino organization for the development of STEM leaders. The organization strives to provide its members with the opportunity to pursue leadership roles and assist in the transition to a career in the STEM field upon graduation.

SHPE aims to empower the Hispanic community at ASU to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. The organization offers opportunities to develop leadership and professionalism, engage in community outreach, improve academically and make a difference in the organization.

The Fulton Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives also offers students the opportunity to attend events and receive funding for travel related to diversity and inclusion. Students travelling domestically or internationally for a competition or conference are invited to apply for the Diversity, Inclusion and Leadership Funding Grant.
